WASHINGTON (AP) _ Kansas' top federal prosecutor testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on his nomination to become a federal district judge in Wichita.
U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren is one of five judicial nominees questioned Tuesday about their qualifications to serve on the federal bench.
Melgren is not expected to face opposition, but it's not clear whether enough time is left for the full Senate to consider his nomination before the end of President Bush's administration.
Congress is expected to recess for the November elections this week or next.
Melgren was nominated for the post in July, after serving six years as U.S. attorney. He is a close friend of Republican Sen. Sam Brownback and previously worked for the Kansas lawmaker.
