TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ New FBI figures show a slight decline in violent crime nationwide last year, but Kansas is a different story.

The FBI's 2007 report on crime statistics shows violent crimes down by seven-tenths of 1 percent nationwide, while Kansas recorded a 7-percent increase from the previous year. The FBI classifies violent crimes as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Property crimes nationwide fell for the fifth year in a row. Kansas saw a 1.5 percent drop in overall property crimes, which include burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

The report is a compilation of offense and arrest data reported by nearly 18,000 law enforcement agencies throughout the nation.
