Kansas Test Scores Top National Average

TOPEKA, Kan. - SAT results released this week show that Kansas students continue to top the national average on critical reading, math and writing scores.

Kansas students participating in the SAT posted a mean critical reading score of 580, compared to the national average of 502.

In mathematics, the mean score for Kansas students was 589, compared to the nationwide mean score of 515.

Kansas students posted a mean score of 564 on the writing portion of the test. Nationwide, the mean score in writing was 494.

Seven percent, or 2,300 Kansas graduating seniors, participated in the exam. Nationally, 1.5 million students took the test. The vast majority of Kansas students take the ACT. Students who take the SAT often apply to colleges outside the Midwest.

The percentage of Kansas males and females participating in the exam was 45.5 percent and 54.3 percent respectively and closely matches the national average of 46.4 percent male and 53.5 percent female. The mean critical reading score for Kansas males was two scale points lower than that for females (581 to 579); however, Kansas males posted a mean math score of 35 scale points higher than that for Kansas females (608 to 573). Females posted a scale score of 573 on the writing portion of the test while males posted a scale score of 554, a 19 point deficit to female test takers.

Minority students comprised 20 percent of the 2,300 students in Kansas who took the SAT test in 2008. The largest minority group participating in the exam was Asian.

While SAT score information is useful in evaluating student achievement when paired with other nationally-based achievement information, the small percentage of Kansas students participating in the exam makes the results less reliable as an indicator of overall student progress.
