Child Run Over After Knocking Vehicle into Neutral

TOPEKA, Kan. - A five-year-old child was taken to the hospital Thursday night after she was accidentally run over by a driverless vehicle, that she had been playing in.

The child's mother told Topeka Police the young girl was playing in the car in a driveway at 3522 SE 7th around 7:30 p.m.

Police say at some point, the child knocked the car from park to neutral and the car began to roll.

As the car began rolling, the child panicked and climbed out the driver’s window. The child’s father ran after the car in an attempt to catch/stop the vehicle as it was rolling but was unable to reach it in time. After the child fell to the pavement, the car continued backing and the driver’s front tire rolled over the child’s abdomen.

Police say the girl's parents immediately took her to Stormont Vail for treatment.

She was unconscious and in critical condition Thursday night; but police say is expected to pull through.

Accident Reconstruction responded to investigate the accident.
