Topekans Help Potential Hurricane Victims

Tropical storm Gustav is picking up steam off the coast of Jamaica, expected to hit the gulf coast sometime this weekend.

Topekans are among the many gearing up to help. The Capital Area Red Cross chapter's emergency response vehicle headed south today. Two volunteers will drive to a staging area, then be sent where ever they're needed once the storm hits to provide meals for people affected.

They say they're happy to be able to do something for people in a time of need.

Louisiana's Governor has declared a state of emergency. 3,000 National Guard troops will be activated tomorrow, on the third anniversary of Katrina.
