TOPEKA, Kan. - Topeka Police remind citizens to be extra cautious when dealing with strangers who go door-to-door and ask for money, ask for a ride or ask to use the phone.
This summer the Police Department has responded to numerous reports of a person approaching residences, providing a story such as they need money for prescriptions, they’re a relative of a neighbor, etc. In a number of incidents reported to Police, the person was provided with money by the residents.
While no crime has reportedly occurred, as the people willingly gave money and no force was used, the situation has the potential to be dangerous and Police encourage citizens to not give money, rides or allow strangers into your home. If there is a person in need of assistance, please refer them to a local social service agency or contact Police.
If a person does not leave or seems suspicious, please notify the Police Department (Dispatch – 368-9200).
