Lyon County Revenue from Sales Tax May Be Delayed

EMPORIA, Kan. - Voters approved it, but Lyon County may not be able to collect its new one-percent sales tax anytime soon.

The Emporia Gazette reports the Kansas Department of Revenue says counties don't have the authority to impose a sales tax in excess of one percent unless special legislation is passed.

Because Lyon County has an existing half percent sales tax, it appears the county could only approve another half-cent tax.

The sales tax money is in the county's 2009 budget to provide property tax relief.

Lyon County commissioners say they'll go to the legislature in January, but the earliest collection could happen is April 1, 2009.
