A man is behind bars after he intentionally rammed his vehicle into a police Car. It happened in the 1900 block of SW Oakley in Topeka at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday.
Topeka police say an officer attempted to pull over a reckless driver, but as the driver slowed to a stop he began to back up. The officer put his car into reverse to avoid being rammed, but the driver continued to accelerate backward until he backed into the officer's passenger side, causing extensive damage.
The driver fled on foot immediately after the collision. The investigation showed the vehicle had been stolen a couple of hours before the incident. Police later found the suspect at his residence with the help of witnesses.
Shawn R. Watkins, 18, was booked into the Shawnee County Jail on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, criminal damage to property, felony obstruction, theft, stop sign violations, and failure to maintain a single lane.
