Car Drives Wrong Direction On I-70, Two Killed In Wreck

Chapman, KS (WIBW)-- A man traveling the wrong direction on I-70 Friday evening struck a van head-on killing the driver and himself.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident happened near mile-marker 272 just to the west of Chapman near 6:30PM.

77-year-old Robert Sexton from California driving westbound on I-70 when he struck the van coming his way. He was killed in the accident so to was the driver of the van.

43-year-old Leonard Edwards from Salina was the driver of the van and was taken to Geary County Hospital where he died.

37-year-old Tonia Edwards was the passenger of the vehicle. She was also taken to Geary County Hospital but later life-flighted to Stormont- Vail in Topeka. She is listed in satisfactory condition.

Also in the van 6-year-old Austin Hedman, 3-year-old Gabriel Hedman and 2-year-old Samuel Hedman. They were all taken to Geary County Hospital where they have been treated and released.

13 News is learning from friends of the family that the children are Tonia's biological children. The kids' biological father was killed in a car accident two years ago and now they have just lost their step-father as well.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt.
