Incumbent Dem. Loses Governor's Support, Seat

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Democrat Mark Gilstrap lost his state Senate seat to an opponent supported by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Kelly Kultala finished with 62 percent of the vote. Both candidates are from Kansas City.

She faces Republican Steve Fitzgerald of Leavenworth in November. Gilstrap first was elected in 1996 in the 5th District that includes parts of Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties.

Gilstrap voted against many of the Democratic governor's legislative proposals. Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley called Gilstrap a Democrat in name only, noting he supported Republican Phill Kline for attorney general in the 2006 election.
