Newton Guardsman Killed in Iraq

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Kansas adjutant general's office says a
Newton soldier has died of injuries he received when his vehicle
overturned while on patrol Saturday in Iraq.

Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting says 18-year-old Spc. Ronald Andrew
Schmidt died Sunday from his injuries. He was assigned to the
Kansas National Guard's Battery C, 1st Battalion, 161st Field
Artillery.

Schmidt enlisted in the Guard on Jan. 27, 2007, during his
senior year at Newton High School.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
