18-Year-Old Newton Soldier Dies In Iraq

Newton, KS (WIBW)--A Newton soldier has died of injuries he received when his vehicle overturned while on patrol Saturday in Iraq.

Major General Todd Bunting says 18-year-old Specialist Ronald Andrew Schmidt died today from his injuries.

Schmidt was assigned to the Kansas National Guard's Battery C, 1st Battalion, 161st Field
Artillery. The young man enlisted in the guard on January 27, 2007, during his senior year at Newton high school.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
