Topeka, KS ((WIBW) After 70 years the Topeka Boulevard Bridge has a new look and is about to re-open. Fishing touches are in place for Sunday's debut to the public.
It has been two years now that this project has been in the works and completion day is just about here. It was back in 1938 that a bridge was originally built, now 70 years later it is replaced with this one that will last at least 80 years.
Work on the bridge began in August of 2006, two years ago and 51 million dollars later the bridge is not only crossable but has a much different look.
"It was one of the better looking bridge I’ve done and just the inspections and the way it was designed and built it's going to last quite a while," Rich Almquist with Hawkins Construction said.
Back in '38 $5,000 people came out to celebrate the opening of the bridge. The very same grand opening celebration will be held this Sunday from 4 o'clock till 10PM; with a ribbon cutting at 5PM.
During the celebration the bridge will be open to walkers only. For those of you who would rather drive across the bridge rather than walk the bridge opens to commuters on Monday at 6AM.
