WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A native of Guatamela has pleaded guilty to not telling authorities about an immigration scam involving a Wichita group that claims to be an American Indian tribe.
In his guilty plea Wednesday, Angel Zamora said he sometimes helped process membership certificates and do other work at the offices of the Kaweah Indian Nation, where his wife worked.
Prosecutors contend the group is a fake tribe that defrauded immigrants in Kansas, Nebraska and elsewhere across the nation by
claiming tribal membership conferred U.S. citizenship. The tribe goes on trial next week.
In his plea deal, Zamora acknowledged that he knew that the people buying them were being defrauded.
His sentencing is set for Oct. 15.
