ELLSWORTH, Kan. (AP) _ Law officers have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of an Ellsworth County homeowner during a struggle with an intruder.
Seventy-two-year-old Richard Kroll died at a Wichita hospital Monday night, about six hours after he was shot in the stomach at his rural home on a gravel road near Interstate 70.
Sheriff Tracy Ploutz said a suspect was arrested after a brief chase and remained in the Ellsworth County Jail Wednesday pending formal charges. The suspect was picked up by Lincoln County deputies after turning into a dead-end road near a wind farm.
Ploutz said a search Tuesday by 200 law officers failed to turn up the shotgun.
Friends say Kroll and his wife, Donna, celebrated 50 years of marriage last month.
