A group of area baseball players is taking their love of the game far and wide.
Fourteen players representing Silver Lake, Jefferson West, Holton, Rock Creek, Riley County, Wabaunsee and Wamego high schools are headed to Germany.
Rock Creek H.S. Coach Scott Harshbarger is leading the team through American's Team International. He, assistant coach Alan Cunningham of Silver Lake, and the players met Monday night before taking off Wednesday. They'll play six games in three cities to promote the game.
The teens say the competition is great, but so is the location. Wesley Burdiek of Silver Lake says it's his first trip overseas, so he's excited.
Kyle Porter of Holton rattled off a list of sites he anticipating, saying to see the old buildings and learning their history and seeing the culture is what he's looking forward to. Porter says he's told their competition will be mainly 20 to 25 year olds, but their skill level should match up with the younger American players, because the Germans don't start playing the game as soon.
Harshbarger says it's the fourth such trip he's organized through America's Team International. He says it's a once in a lifetime experience for the players. He says they get to play the game they love while experiencing other countries.
