Jenkins' Babe Comment Fires Controversy

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Former Congressman Jim Ryun is upset that his opponent in the Republican primary called him "babe'' during a televised debate.

Ryun and State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins are seeking the right to challenge Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Boyda. Boyda unseated Ryun in 2006.

During a debate Tuesday night televised by KSNT in Topeka, Jenkins told Ryun she voted for tax increases as a legislator in 2002 because the state had to pay for federal mandates.

She said, "We were at your mercy, babe.''

Jenkins' campaign says she uses the term with friends a lot and it slipped out accidentally.

But Ryun's campaign told the Lawrence Journal-World that it was childish.
