Topeka City Council members set the highest amount they're willing to put property taxes at in the next budget year.
Council members Tuesday night approved the tax levy that will be published with the 2009 budget proposal and notice of public hearing. It's 35.299 mills - an increase of nearly three mills over this year. The vote was 5-4.
The published amount becomes the maximum budget the council can approve. They can go with less. If they take the max, it would bring in another $3 million for the city.
The council has a public hearing on the budget July 29th.
