An Emporia man is behind bars, accused of shooting a man who forced his way into his home.

Our radio partner KVOE in Emporia reports Dwight Lee Swafford, 55, was charged Friday with attempted second-degree murder.

Police Chief Gary Smith says Michael William Calvert, 29, tried to force his way into Swafford's house shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

An altercation ensued, with several bullets fired. At least one hit Calvert in the shoulder.

Calvert was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to serious.

Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman told KVOE News that Swafford has a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 30th.
