TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Topeka fire crews say a car fire Saturday caused severe damage to a North Topeka home.
Topeka firefighters were called to the 5100 block of NW Kendall Dr. shortly after 4:30 pm to a car fire inside a garage.
Fire officials say the owner of the home attempted to put out the car fire but the flames soon engulfed the entire garage and then moved towards the north side of the home.
After a little over an hour, firefighters were able to contain the flames to just the garage and south side of the home but say the damage done will the leave the home at a total loss.
There were two residents inside the home at the time of the fire and both were evacuated safely.
Fire officials say the monetary damages are 50% of the homes value.
The Shawnee County 2013 appraised value lists the homes at $118,600
