New Topeka 501 Superintendent Dr. Kevin Singer watched over his first board meeting Thursday night -- and witnessed a changing of the guard for the new school year.

Dr. Peg McCarthy was named board president, and Patrick Woods was named vice president.

They hope to continue to focus on early education, as well as non-english speaking learners and the gifted programs.

Singer said he intends to work on better salary and benefits for potential teachers to end the teacher shortage in Topeka.
