Wichita City Manager Backs Out of Job Contract

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ The new Wichita city manager says he doesn't want the job after all.

Mayor Carl Brewer said Pat Salerno phoned him Monday to inform him he was rejecting the job he had accepted just four weeks ago. Salerno told the mayor that ``it just doesn't feel right'' but refused to elaborate further.

Salerno was city manager of Sunrise, Fla., for 18 years before resigning earlie this year.

Brewer said Salerno's decision to renege on a signed employment contract violates the International City/County Management Association's code of ethics. He says the city will explore its legal options.

Meanwhile, the city is exploring other options. Interim City Manager Ed Flentje is under contract through Friday.
