Family Remembers Murdered Son As Talented Musician

Topeka, KS (WIBW)-- The father and stepmother of Rodney Jennings II that was gunned down early Tuesday morning in Topeka is speaking out during their time of mourning.

Shayna Jennings says her stepson 21-year old- Rodney Jennings II was a talented musician learning how to play the drums from his father Rodney Jennings. Jennings even started two of his own companies, Rod Productions and Anotha Level Records.

"I don't want him to be remembered for being a 21-year-old black man out early in the morning causing trouble," Jennings said during a phone conversation.

Rodney's father and step mom both live in Wichita. They say Rodney was living with them but recently moved to Topeka to live with his biological mother Sharon Harris.

Rodney's family says they were told by Topeka Police that Rodney was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. They say police report it is likely a gang related initiation shooting.

The Capitol Journal reports that Jennings was shot twice once to his head and another to his leg while getting cigarettes from his car for his girlfriend in the early morning hours Tuesday. The family says that he walkint to a gas station at the time of the shooting. The shooting happened around 2:30AM in the front yard of 1419 SE 10th street. Rodney was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injures, he died of those injuries Thursday morning.

There have been no arrests in connection to his murder. Detectives say they are in search of information connected to a red car leaving the area right after the shooting. If you have any information you are asked to call 785-368-9400.

Jenning's is the 6th homicide in the city this year.

Meanwhile the family says they will remember Rodney as a talented musician who had a bright future ahead.
