Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller says TPD does not want to put bars out of business, they want to make the bars safe so patrons don't feel they will be victims of crime -- a win/win situation for police and owners trying to make a profit.
This after a woman escapes a robbery attempt outside of Deep Pockets on Tuesday evening. Click on the video to watch that footage.
The owner of Deep Pockets, Frank Antonelli says he does everything he can to keep his patrons safe, including having video camera and lights installed around his bars.
He said he would gladly pay off-duty uniformed police officers to patrol the parking lot, but that is not allowed.
Miller says officers are not bouncers, and bars need to hire their own security officers.
He said the police have been working with bars to train employees, and many bars have established dress codes to keep out crime.
Police are investigating and trying to crack down on violence in bars, but also underage drinking and illegal gambling.
