Penny Problem Causes Shawnee County Headaches

A single penny added up to a big headache for the Shawnee County Treasurer's Office.

Treasurer Larry Wilson says about 925 taxpayers received notices saying they owed "one cent" in property taxes. He says their mortgage company, Wells Fargo Home Mortage shorted the county that penny and the delinquent notices went out automatically.

Wilson says people who received such a notice can call or visit the treasurer's office and they won't have to pay the penny.

He says his office is working with wells fargo to recover costs associated with the glitch, including postage.
