Development Proposal Draws Symbolic Objection from Mayor Bunten

A rezoning ordinance in Topeka will take effect without Mayor Bill Bunten's signature.

The Topeka City Council's approval of a proposed development by Gene Jani for an area near SW 34th and Fairlawn is at issue. Bunten says he's opposed to the plan as passed, but he's been advised by interim city attorney Braxton Copely that the ordinance is not subject to mayoral veto. Therefore, Bunten says he's expressing his objections by not signing it.

Bunten says he'd like to see Jani and the neighborhood work together toward a mutually acceptable plan.
