(Manhattan, KS)-- Manhattan could be the home for a controversial animal research lab.
Opponents say an outbreak of one of the most contagious animal diseases from any of five locations being considered for a new high-security laboratory, would be more devastating to the U.S. economy than an outbreak from the isolated island lab in New York where such research is now being conducted.
Those with Homeland Security say an outbreak would cost in excess of 4 billion dollars, that's according to a 1,005-page Homeland Security Department study.
Manhattan is one of the five locations that are being considered, other cities in Georgia, North Carolina. Mississippi and Texas are also being considered.
