TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW-TV) Officials say 2013 was a record low year for fatalities on Kansas roads. The preliminary report showed that there were 344 deaths on Kansas roads last year, compared to 405 in 2012.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said 2013 number was the lowest they've seen since the department started keeping records in 1947.

The second lowest number of fatalities was 385 in 2008 and 1969 was by far the most deadly in the state's history, when 780 people died.

Officials say that the reduced number is likely due to several factors, including investments in infrastructure, more people wearing seat belts and safer vehicles.
