GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) _
With a growing demand for Kansas welders, the Department of
Commerce awarded the community college in southwest Kansas a
$141,000 grant for the program. The money will go toward hiring a
full-time welding instructor and building renovations, which are to
be completed in August before classes begin.
The department says the need for welders in Kansas -- mostly in
the energy, manufacturing and construction industries -- is
expected to increase 15 percent by 2012.
The grant money is expected to revamp the program, which has a
10-year-old partnership with the Garden City school district.
