OTTAWA, Kan. (AP) _ Garnett city officials say one of the city's
three commissioners is paralyzed from the waist down after an
accident this weekend during kart races at Lake Garnett.

City commissioner Mike Norman was airlifted nearly 60 miles to
Overland Park Regional Trauma Center Saturday after hitting a tree
while racing. Norman broke his back and injured his spinal cord.

Garnett City Manager Joyce Martin said doctors would perform
surgery Monday.

Norman, who owns a local Dairy Queen, is expect to be
hospitalized for some time before he starts physical therapy.

The commission will meet with two members until Norman can
return, Martin said.

The kart races around Lake Garnett were the first of two summer
race events.
