Safe Streets Coalition and Topeka City of Character announced the Champion of Character award for this month at the Great Overland Station.
Mike Typer was nominated by Topeka police officer Ross Gustafson. Gustafson was engaged while taking a suspect into custody with no back up when Typer offered his assistance. He stayed with the officer until other police officers arrived.
Typer said he was just doing what he could to keep his family and neighborhood safe.
The Character Recognition Project is part of a broader initiative to address crime and make Topeka the safest capital city in America.
