TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Five years after the Menninger Clinic moved to Houston, buildings on its campus in Topeka have started coming down.
Construction crews will be demolishing buildings for the next four months on the former psychiatric care campus on the northwest side of town.
They're making way for development of a health care park on 132 acres to be operated by St. Francis Health Center in Topeka.
The hospital is moving its operations from a downtown location. Its plans include construction of a 250-bed hospital.
The first building to fall was a woodworking shop where psychiatric patients would carve objects as part of their therapy.
However, an iconic clock tower that marked the campus will remain.
