(Topeka, KS) -- Before they put on a uniform to protect and serve our communities.. officers have to pass written and physical exams.

Friday was day one of the Topeka Police Department's two-day exams at the Oakland Community Center. A total of 15 recruits will be chosen from the classes that continue Saturday.

Stephen Christopher came out to give it a shot because he feels being a police officer is doing something important and giving back to the community.

"It'd be different day to day, doing something interesting. There are just a lot of positive aspects about it," he said "I don't think it'd be too dangerous. You got all these people to help back you up. You got all this equipment. You're good to go."

TPD recruits also take a polygraph exam, submit to background checks, and undergo a number of interviews.
