WICHITA, Kansas (WIBW) -- A 19-year-old man died in Cheney Reservoir after attempting to help a friend.
13 News' sister station KAKE-TV reports that rescue crews have recovered the body of a man who drowned at the lake in Wichita.
Authorities say the incident happened around 5:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. The man was swimming with family and friends at the lake when a friend began struggling in the water. The man swam to help the friend, but witnesses say he disappeared under the surface.
Officers then received a call of a possible missing person in the water, and a search was launched. Cheney State Park rangers, along with the Cheney Fire Department and EMS, searched in the lake. Three boats were on the water, and divers were searching the lake bottom. The Department of Wildlife, Parks and Recreation used a search boat with scanning sonar.
About three hours later the body of the missing man was found in about six feet of water. A Cheney State Park ranger said he probably drowned in deeper water, but then drifted to the shallower end.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
His name is not being released.
