WASHINGTON (AP) _ Democrat Jim Slattery is defending his work as a Washington lawyer and lobbyist as he challenges Kansas Republican Pat Roberts for the U.S. Senate.

Slattery -- a former congressman from Topeka -- says he never took on a client or a cause that he didn't believe in.

During his 14 years at one of Washington's premier law firms, Slattery has lobbied on behalf of more than three dozen corporations and interest groups.

The list ranges from steel and utility companies to railroads and telecommunications firms.

Roberts' campaign has scolded Slattery for being a lobbyist, but Slattery notes that Roberts has taken millions of dollars from special interests over the years.
