Fallen Firefighter Tony Cox Receives Medal of Valor

The widow and baby of Topeka Fire Capt. Anthony Cox accepted an award on his behalf Wednesday night.

The Topeka Fire Department presented Karrie Cox and baby daughter, Hannah, with the medal of valor in a ceremony at Gage Park.

Cox collapsed while taking a break from fighting a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in August. The coroner says his death was caused by heart disease and the stress of the heat.

Hannah, nearly five months old, was born after his death. Karrie Cox says she sees Tony in her eyes, and knows he didn't leave her alone. She says the days are getting easier, and she credits the support she's received from Tony's fire department colleagues for helping her through.

She says she was proud to receive the honor on Tony's behalf. She says he did put his family first, but he always made sure the community was taken care of, too, and he never asked for any recognition in return.

The medal of honor, medal of meritorious service, certificate of appreciation and merit, and the letter of commendation were also presented to deserving firefighters at the ceremony.
