TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Former Kansas Congressman Jim Slattery officially launches his U.S. Senate campaign, describing himself as an agent for change.
He's seeking the Democratic nomination to run against incumbent Republican Pat Roberts, who's seeking a third term. Almost immediately, Slattery faced a radio ad attacking him as a Washington lobbyist.
At a Topeka news conference this morning, Slattery described Roberts as an entrenched politician who has been in office too long. He called the Iraq war "tragic and costly'' and said he would have voted against the congressional resolution allowing President Bush to wage it.
He also said current political leaders have demonstrated a "breathtaking incompetence.''
About 100 supporters gathered to watch Slattery kick off his campaign. Governor Sebelius introduced him.
