Topekans who want to dispose of their yard waste for free this spring at the City of Topeka’s Yard Materials Recycling Facility have one last shot this Friday and Saturday.
The YMRC at I-70 and MacVicar is also giving away free mulch (no semi-trailer loads) while supplies last through Saturday. The facility is open 8 a.m. - noon and 1- 4:45 p.m.
Topekans can also consider burning their brush piles where appropriate. Citizens seeking to conduct an open burn are required to first request and obtain a permit from the City of Topeka Fire Department. Permits can be obtained by calling the TFD Fire Prevention Bureau at 785-368-4000 or by going online at: http://www.topeka.org/firedepartment/burningpermit/PublicAdd.aspx
After May 31, Code Enforcement Officers will begin writing citations to those who have brush piles on their property, which is a violation of the City’s nuisance law. Topekans who placed tree limbs at the curb as part of this year’s Project Takeover/Makeover event but didn’t pre-register to have them picked up by TO/MO volunteers are responsible for disposing of the limbs themselves. Crews will only pick up limbs from those properties in which owners pre-registered. Those who pre-registered but have not had their limbs picked up are asked to be patient. Crews are following a plan based on the pre-registration list.
Also this Saturday, the following services will be available at no charge:
• Tire Amnesty Day: Tires will be accepted as part of a Tire Amnesty Day between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Expert Tires, 3701 SW Topeka Blvd. Limit 4 tires per household. 2,000 tire limit.
• Rolling Meadows Recycling and Disposal Facility: The landfill at 7351 NW Hwy 75, will be open at no charge from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Saturday activities are in conjunction with this year’s Keep America Beautiful, Great American Cleanup and Earth Day Events.
