Shawnee Heights Fire was called to a possible structure fire at 6542 SE 45th St. shortly after Midnight, early Tuesday morning.
When crews arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters on scene had to fight the blaze from outside because of the intensity of the flames. The owners of the house said it has not been lived in for two years and that it should be abandoned. Firefighters also said they did not want to endanger the crews since there was no chance anyone could survive the fire if they were inside.
Even though the house was abandoned, firefighters still had to try to extinguish the flames. Mark Engholm, of Shawnee Heights Fire, said dangerous chemicals are released with fires, so they had to save as much of the structure as possible.
The owners of the house kept electricity hooked up to the house even though noone occupied the house. They said someone had broken into the house in the past.
No official cause of the fire has been released yet.
