Animal Disease in Kansas

If Manhattan, Kansas becomes home to a new biodefense lab, it could also be home to research on contagious animal diseases.

Kansas is pitching a site on the K-State campus for the 450 million dollar bio and agro defense facility. Four other states are also being considered.

A homeland security study says 542 thousand head of livestock are around Manhattan.

It's raising concerns that conducting the research near huge herds... would risk a catastrophic outbreak of animal disease.
