Stephan Serrano of Topeka West High School has won a $1,000 scholarship for writing the best essay from Kansas on the relationship between natural resources and international conflict in the National Peace Essay Contest sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace.

Serrano will join other essay writers from around the country for a week long trip to Washington D.C. in June.

The contest is in its 21st year. Every year, high school students write analytical essays on topics chosen by the Institutes' Board of Directors. This year's topic was natural resources and conflict.

An independent panel of experts judge the essays and a winner is chosen from every state, one from all U.S. territories, and one from students living abroad.

While in Washington this summer, Serrano's essay will be ranked among essay's from all other winners and then ranked. Scholarships will be awarded to national first- $10,000, national second- $5,000, and national third place $2500.
