About 406,000 pounds of frozen cattle heads are voluntarily being recalled.

Elkhorn Valley Packing of Harper, Kansas says the tonsils were not completely removed from the cattle. The USDA's Food Service and Inspection Service says regulations are that tonsil tissue must be removed, because it is known to contain the infective agent in cattle that have BSE, also known as mad cow disease.

The various weight boxes of whole beef head bear the establishment numbers "19549A" inside the USDA mark of inspection, with a package code of "91700" or "93700."

Customers with questions or concerns can call the USAD meat and poultry hotline at 1-888-MP-HOTLINE.
