TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Westar Energy says it paid new CEO William Moore total compensation of nearly 3 million dollars last year.

Moore took over in July for retiring CEO Jim Haines Jr. at the Topeka-based company.

Moore's pay included $525,000 in salary and $176,000 in other compensation. Most of his pay came in the form of stock and options, which were valued at 2.1 million dollars when they were awarded.

Haines retired after serving as CEO since 2002. He received compensation valued at $508,000 in 2007.

Westar is the largest electric utility in Kansas. The company reported earnings last year of 167 million dollars, or $1.85 per share. That compares with 164 million dollars, or $1.88 per share, during 2006.
