The two top staffers of the state board regulating doctors announced their resignations Wednesday. Executive Director Larry Buening will leave July 1st, one month after the resignation of General Counsel Mark Stafford takes effect June 1.
The Board of Healing Arts was under pressure to fire both of them, from lawmakers upset over the case of Haysville physician Stephen Schneider. Federal prosecutors accuse him of running a "pill mill," and have linked his clinic to more than 55 overdose deaths. The board held a special meeting today to discuss personnel issues. But the board president said he did not ask for the resignations from Buening or Stafford.
