Winter snow made the state's economic picture look a little better last month. That's because local governments had to hire extra staff in
February to clear away snow.
The Department of Labor says local government employment was
about 5,900 higher than it was in February 2007.
That boost was a significant factor in the total job growth over
the year. About 18,200 more Kansans held nonfarm jobs last month
than in February 2007, an increase of 1.3 percent.
The monthly unemployment rate also dropped, to 4 percent in
February from 4.3 percent in January. The rate for February 2007
was 4.4 percent.
