Charges in Emporia Shooting Could Come at End of Week

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) _ The Lyon County undersheriff says he plans to file affidavits with prosecutors in an accidental shooting death that occurred last week.

Undersheriff Richard Old said he'll submit the papers to County Attorney Marc Goodman late Thursday or Friday, one week after Alfonso Barajas was shot dead during a gathering at a home. A man
was aiming his rifle at a bird when Barajas stood up in the line of
fire and was shot in the forehead.

Sheriff Gary Eichorn has said from the start that he would ask Goodman to file involuntary manslaughter charges in Barajas' death.
A man was taken into custody and has since posted bond.

Old said he will not release the suspect's name unless charges are filed.
