Fort Riley Army Chefs Give Medal-Winning Performance

FORT RILEY, Kan. - Several Fort Riley Soldiers will be recognized for their outstanding performance at the annual U.S. Army culinary arts competition by Maj. Gen. Robert Durbin, commander of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley. The ceremony will be at 6:50 p.m. March 27 at Riley’s Conference Center.

Fort Riley’s team of eight food service specialist took home 13 medals from the competition held at Fort Lee, Va., during the first two weeks of March. Teams from around the Department of Defense displayed their skills in cooking, baking and meal presentation.

Fort Riley’s top winning Soldier-chefs were Sgt. Justin Bloomer, Spc. Elba Gonzales, Spc. Eddio Curtis and Pfc. Melvin Martin who took silver medals in the field cooking event. Martin also won the bronze medal in the Junior Chef Competition. Spc. Kavonne Tieuel, Gonzalez and Martin won the bronze medal in the contemporary category. Fort Riley’s team also won eight bronze medals in the food display and live cooking pastries events. Also participating from Fort Riley were the team manager, Sgt. 1st Class Myra Hernandez, Sgt. 1st Class Ned Cary, and Pfc. Adelyne Sepulveda.

Competitors included teams from Forts Bliss, Bragg, Carson, Drum, Lewis, Lee, McNair, Myer, Monroe and Sill, the Army Reserve, the Alaska and Hawaii National Guards, U.S. Forces Korea, US Army Europe, the Coast Guard, the Pentagon, Rock Island Arsenal, the Marine Corps, the Navy, and the Air Force.

Fort Riley’s Soldier-chefs regularly deploy in support of combat operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan where they supervise and take part in operations to feed the Soldiers and civilians under all conditions.
