OLATHE, Kan. (AP) _ First lady Laura Bush stops at an elementary school in Olathe to encourage students to read and do volunteer work.
During a one-hour visit to Rolling Ridge Elementary School, Bush and Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas visited a fourth-grade class during a vocabulary lesson.
Later at an all-school assembly, she encouraged students to read as much as they watch TV.
She and Roberts also presented eight students with the President's Volunteer Service Award. The students contributed at least 75 hours of volunteer service within the last year in such areas as reading, baby-sitting, helping at the school and working at Meals on Wheels.
After the school visit, Bush was attending a private fundraiser for Roberts.
