Kansas Residents File Lawsuit Over Gambling Law

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) Four Wyandotte County residents are suing to
block the construction of a state-owned casino near Kansas Speedway.

The lawsuit alleges that three proposed casino projects would benefit from public funding used for the speedway or development around it.

The lawsuit says a gambling law passed last year specifically prohibits the use of public funding on a casino.

The four residents of Kansas City, Kan., filed the lawsuit Monday in Shawnee County District Court.

The defendants are four agencies that will have some role in picking which developer gets a contract to build and operate the casino.

Lottery Executive Director Ed Van Petten said the agency believes its actions in negotiating potential contracts are proper.
