The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office has responded to numerous complaints of motorists driving around barricades set up around the construction zone on SW Wanamaker Road. As a result, Sheriff’s Deputies have increased enforcement efforts in this area.
Wanamaker Road is under construction from the 4600-4900 block and is closed to thru traffic. Road barricades indicating the road is closed have been set up in the 4600 block and 4900 block of Wanamaker Road. There are also posted detour signs directing traffic around the construction area.
Violators who are caught driving around the barricades or moving the barricades may be charged under statute 68-2106 Unlawful to Destroy or Remove Barricades, Warning Signs, or Drive on Closed Hard-Surfaced Roadways. This offense is a misdemeanor, punishable by fines up to $100.00 and 90 days in jail.
Violators may also be charged under statute 8-1507 Official Traffic Control Devices; Required Obedience; Placement; Presumptions. This offense is a traffic infraction, punishable by a fine of $60.00 plus a $66.00 court cost.
The Sheriff’s Office will continue to monitor and enforce traffic laws in the construction area. Motorists are urged to follow the marked detours.
